Mr Ashit Kumar Gungah

1961-2023

It is with profound sadness and sorrow that we learnt about the demise of Mr Ashit Kumar Gungah, the Chairman of the Mauritius Ports Authority (MPA), on 1 June 2023.

Mr Gungah, who was a former Minister of Commerce, died after a brief illness at the age of 62.

After a rich political career spanning more than two decades, Mr Gungah was appointed Chairman of the MPA in 2022. He also held the position of Executive Director of the National Competitiveness and Productivity Council since 2020.

During his short time as Chairman, Mr Gungah initiated a series of laudable measures at the MPA.

As an eloquent speaker and administrator, his approach was characterised by passion and dedication. He deployed his many qualities in the service of ideals, all of which were firmly rooted in serving the community and in the intrinsic value of people’s lives.

Mr Gungah will be remembered as an inspirational leader with many qualities and his inspiration and enthusiasm will serve as a guide to many who have known him. His departure will be felt deeply and personally by many in Mauritius and abroad.

The MPA presents its sincere condolences to his family and close relatives, as the country mourns his loss.
