Strategically situated in the Indian Ocean, some 2,000 kms off the Eastern coast of Africa and 890km to the East of Madagascar, the Republic of Mauritius is a group of islands consisting of the main island Mauritius, Rodrigues and several other smaller islands extending some 600kms to the North. It is of volcanic origin and is surrounded by more than 150kms of white sandy beaches, transparent lagoon protected from the open sea by the world’s third largest coral reef surrounding the island.
The island of Mauritius covers an area of 1,865 km2 and is made up of coastal plains which gradually rise to a central plateau to the South West, where it reaches its highest point of 828 metres above sea level. Numerous lush mountains throughout the island, fast flowing rivers, tropical forests and breathtaking panoramic views add to the charm and beauty of the place. The climate is sub-tropical and average mid-day temperatures range between 22 degrees C in August and 28 degrees C in January.

The prevailing wind is from easterly to southerly with an average force of 15 to 20 km/hr. The cyclonic period generally extends from November to April or May. The cyclone generally moves in a south westerly direction, initially, thence turn south in about latitude 220 south then moves south easterly, occasionally reaching the temperate latitude before filling. Current around the island is mainly wind derived.
