Island Container Terminal

In order to cater for container traffic beyond 2025, the MPA has commissioned a techno-economic feasibility study on the construction of an Island Container Terminal opposite the existing MCT. The contract for the consultancy services has been awarded and the study is expected to be completed by end 2018.

With the container throughput expected to exceed 1 million TEUs by 2025, MPA is investing heavily to cement its position as the preferred regional maritime gateway. We are currently working closely with the African Development Bank on a feasibility study for a new breakwater and an Island Terminal. Besides increasing our ability to handle a bigger fleet of vessels exceeding 10,000 TEUs likely to operate in the Indian Ocean in the near future, this project aims at addressing our vulnerability to climate change by providing a tranquil basin at the harbour.
